Prepare to engage in a thought-provoking armchair conversation featuring two distinguished leaders at the forefront of Black media: Ron Busby Sr., President & CEO of the U.S. Black Chambers (USBC), and Jim Winston, President of the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB). This dialogue moderated by USBC Chairman of the Board, Charles O’Neal promises to illuminate the pressing issues that shape the landscape of Black media.

In a groundbreaking move, the U.S. Black Chambers (USBC) recently acquired the National Association of Black-Owned Broadcasters (NABOB), which is now a part of USBC Media. Ron Busby Sr. and Jim Winston will provide insights into the strategic thinking behind this acquisition, its implications for Black media, and the collaborative opportunities USBC Media presents. Gain insights into how NABOB will seamlessly integrate into the USBC Media Network, creating an ecosystem where Black media entities thrive and collaborate synergistically.

Actions More Than Words: Creating Black Owned Media Ad Spend Accountability Action Plan

This panel was inspired by the NABOB statement published after the death of George Floyd entitled “Words are Not enough.” Many major corporations announced commitments to spend more money with Black businesses as a way of helping to overcome the cycle of poverty that exists in too many Black communities. However, the recent Supreme Court affirmative action decision has led to attacks from the extreme right on all forms of DE&I activity. Our panelists will discuss the status of DE&I activity in corporate America and what steps need to be taken to ensure the commitments that were announced are met.

Nielsen: Emerging Trends in Audio and Black American Audience Update

Technological advancements continue to sweep the audio industry, presenting challenges and opportunities for station owners, operators and other stakeholders. Nielsen describes how it is evolving to ensure that it continues to provide the industry the highest quality audience measurement in this rapidly changing environment.  Nielsen also reports on the latest trends in audio consumption of Black American audiences, including the fact that audio continues to reach more Black consumers than any other platform, linear or digital.

Audio Programmers: Responding to the Ever-Changing Competitive Arena

The audio industry changes daily. Our panel of audio programming experts will discuss how their stations and networks are responding to those changes. They will discuss the daily challenges of the growing podcast industry, Nielsen ratings, AM radio not being included in some electric vehicles, how to identify new music and new artists, how to identify and develop new on-air talent, and how to keep the format fresh and keep audiences engaged. They will also discuss online digital programming and how this segment of the audio industry relates to the over-the-air segment.

Black Women in Radio: Trailblazing Voices Across Broadcast Ownership & Media Operations

This panel was inspired by 75 Years of Black Owned Broadcasting and 50 Years of Hip-Hop Music that we are celebrating at the Conference. Black women have always had unique challenges in the struggles of Black people in America. Those unique challenges have existed for all of the 75 years that Black people have owned radio stations in this country. An extraordinary group of women, including station owners, managers, on-air talent, and executives, will discuss life in the radio industry from a variety of perspectives.

50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop Armchair conversation with MC Lyte Hosted by Roy Wood Jr.

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop, The National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB), a division of the U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. (USBC), will honor legendary rapper, dj, and entrepreneur, MC Lyte, during an exclusive ‘Salute The DJ’ themed armchair conversation hosted by comedian, radio veteran, and “The Daily Show” correspondent, Roy Wood Jr.

In an exclusive armchair conversation with Roy Wood Jr., MC Lyte will journey through her rise in hip-hop, to becoming a sought-after voice-over talent, cross-platform media host, author, and production company owner. Additionally, the two will discuss their love of radio and their long-time association with broadcasting! Attendees will also have the opportunity for a brief Q&A at the conclusion of the conversation!

Washington Update: What Broadcasters Need to Know

LOCATION:

The licensing and operation of radio and television stations is heavily regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. This panel will discuss matters pending before the FCC, Congress, and other federal departments or agencies, that may affect broadcasters. Among the issues they will discuss are: the arrival of Anna Gomez as the new FCC Commissioner; whether a new Tax Certificate bill will be introduced in Congress; the FCC’s Quadrennial Review of its radio and television multiple ownership rules; the FCC Incubator Program; the FCC Communications Equity and Diversity Council, the FCC’s efforts to promote universal broadband access and adoption, and other matters pending in Washington.

The NABOB & Power of Urban Radio Awards recognize exemplary achievement in advertising and marketing to the Black consumer market by utilizing Black owned media. Recipients of the NABOB & Power of Urban Radio Awards are selected based on their public service and their support of diversity and inclusion.

The awards recognition includes the presentation of the NABOB National Service Award, Marc Pritchard Corporate Impact Award, and the Mickey Leland Public Service Award. Previous honorees include Attorney General Eric Holder, award winning journalist, April Ryan, civil rights activist and comedian Dick Gregory, Edna Kane-Williams of AARP, Alva Adams-Mason of Toyota, and Congressman G.K. Butterfield to name a few.

Tarshena Armstong, Director of Diversity Marketing & Development at General Motors will deliver the keynote address at the 2023 NABOB & Power of Urban Radio Awards.

General Motors will also receive the esteemed Marc Pritchard Corporate Impact Award.

NABOB will honor Dr. Benjamin Chavis, Jr., President of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) with the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award.
